Our History in Brief

Our church building was completed in 1902, making it more than a century old. It has many decades of faithful ministry to thank God for. While the building is old, it’s people are not. The present congregation have lived through many ground-breaking changes over the years. In the past twenty years, ministry at KCPC has become far more contemporary in its style of worship than it ever was.

Some of the modifications introduced moved the church into a watershed period: people who felt that they could not move with the changes that were implemented, moved to other congregations where the worship was more to their taste. Over the course of its first century our congregation has witnessed many changes in South African society and even in the area of personal religious beliefs. A hundred years ago many of our members had grown up in the strict atmosphere of Scottish Presbyterianism, where moral teachings were the main preoccupation of the Church.

These early members would be surprised if they could return to and experience the charismatic style of worship enjoyed by the "me" generation, with its emphasis on personal relationships with God. Also, the demography of Cape Town has changed, with suburbs spreading ever more widely. Most people no longer expect to live their lives in one place and indeed many move frequently, often to other cities or even to other countries. None-the-less we thank God for every opportunity to proclaim His good news to the community.

Some Recent 'History'

And now for 'Recent History', i.e. an event which has now been placed in the history of the church. We have closed the entrance on the left of the Church and re-opened the right hand one. Why? Well because we have constructed a new set of steps there which incorporate a ramp for those who need wheelchair access. The new ramp sports stonework to blend in with the Church's 100-year old stonework and the whole new construction has splendid iron railing in keeping with the character of the Church and painted what can best describe as 'British Racing Green'. It looks very smart and was an inspired choice of colour.
